98% of Our Beginning Pottery Students Successfully Center Clay and Complete Their First Pots on Their First Day!

We have all wondered what it might be like to have clay spinning on a wheel in our hands almost magically forming into bowls, plates, cups, vases and limitless shapes of creative imagination. In one way it appears so easy when we see it happen, but we also realize or have heard that it's much more difficult than it appears. The truth actually lies somewhere in between. While it really cannot be described as easy, with proper instruction it is something you can learn the basics of quite quickly. In your first month you'll be making a surprising array of cups, bowls and vases that can become cherished parts of your household. You'll find that the process is rewarding and that it provides a healthy balance to the ups and downs of modern life. You'll also make friends with both students and our staff. We invite you to join us! Don't put it off... do it today!

Student Centered Instruction

We have a goal:  every beginning student centers clay and makes their first pot by the end of the first day.  Sounds simple, but it’s not the way it’s traditionally done:  Usually a talented potter throws a pot as a demo and then says something like, “Go do that.”  Learning that way is often a struggle that can go on for weeks or more.
Our founder, Mark Petersen, believed there was a better way!  We break down the process of making a pot on the wheel into small steps that you can understand.  Many students then make that first pot on their first try, but those who don’t, get one on one help to guide them to success on day one.  The result is that 98% of our first day students make that first pot in their first two hour class.  You will too!
Your class includes four classes each month, plus studio time (time to work on your own).  Studio time can be used anytime the building is open (subject to wheels being available).  If you miss a class, don’t worry!  As a student you can make up that class in any other class time when convenient for you!

Superior Ceramic Arts Facilities

When you walk into our studio you’ll find a college level facility. You’ll find 20 electric Laguna and Shimpo professional potters wheels, four large work tables and over 40 feet of work counter. This means you’ll always have the equipment and space you need to learn and create the pots and art in your mind. You’ll choose from over 8 high fire stoneware and porcelain clays and 20 proven glazes. Plus the glazes are in large 5 to 20 gallon buckets (making application much easier and so much quicker).
Finally we are the only teaching studio in SLC offering cone 10 gas reduction firings (other that the U and Westminster) in our big 35 cubic foot natural gas kiln. This gives you size options and colors and effects not available in small electric kilns used in most smaller teaching studios.
This studio is open to you (for your studio time use) Monday to Friday 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  (On Saturdays at 3 the Studio is often reserved for special workshops)

Workshops, Date Night &
Special Group Classes

We’re happy to announce three new offerings:  Date Night sessions will start on the last Saturday night of our monthly billing cycle and are really for everyone:  singles, couples and groups of friends.  You’ll get to try out this fun art form in a single one night format that includes everything:  clay, tools, lesson, and the firing and glazing of one item made by you, all for just $65 per person.  Plus you can apply $40 of your fee directly towards tuition for the next month if you want to continue study.
Workshops will generally be scheduled for Saturday afternoons after 3 p.m. either in the afternoon or evening.  They will study special subjects not usually included in our regular wheel or hand building curriculum, or special subjects taught by guest instructors.
See the schedule page for more info. on specific date night or upcoming workshops.
Group sessions have most often been requested by businesses and organizations as team building experiences. Call our office at 801-467-5444 to inquire about creating a workshop for your group.
